Reversing Name Order in Mail Merge

A recent question: How do I reverse last name first in a mail merge?

When you do the merge, you will enter and  arrange fields. Fields are how a mail merge identifies what parts to change, and are indicated by brackets. For example, you put [first name] and [last name] in your document. That will change the words “first name” and “last name” into fields. There is a wizard that will stick the brackets in for you, so don’t worry about that.

In the data sheet you want to use, you name your fields identically, but it doesn’t matter what order you put them in. So if your data file lists:

Mail Merge Data Sheet

but you set up your fields in your letter to read:

[first name] [last name]

[address]

[city], [state]

the result in the merge will be:

Joe Smith

123 Some Lane

Phoenix, AZ

What matters is where you put the fields in the letter, not the source (data) file.
