A trick for counting almost anything

Say you have a list of email addresses and want to know how many there are. If you try pasting them into Excel, they all land in one cell and there you are, heaving sighs and looking put-upon. Do this instead:

Paste the names into Word.

Highlight them.

Under “Table” choose “Covert,” then “Text to Table.”

Now look down near the bottom of the box that comes up. You’ll see “Separate text at…” Choose whatever originally separated the email addresses. In Outlook the default separator is a semi-colon, so you would type a semi-colon in the “Other” box.

Now look up near the top. For “Number of Columns,” enter “1″

The number of rows that appear in the “Number of Rows” box automatically is the number of email addresses. You can cancel and throw away the Word doc – you have your answer.
